I think they are the most practicle solution for a gaming surface.
So here we have a step by step easy to follow thread:
Here we are making a tile with a contoured hill on it.
I was going to a plain tile but the hill tile uses more techniques so is a better study.
Firstly take 2 self adhesive tiles and trim one of them by 5mm on 2 adjacent edges.
Stick the smaller tile to the bigger tile so that there is an equal overhang an all sides.
This will stop the bottom tile from poking out from under the top one preventing a good flush fit between tiles.
Then cut out some shapes for your hills.
Make each layer small enough that your miniatures bases will fit on each level.
Trim each level of hill so that the edges are sloped and not sheer.
Once done and stuck down utilising the self adhesive stickyness seal them with a coating of watered down PVA
Next paint the edges of the top tile and the bottom tile.
If you do not paint them now you will find that later on when you do paint the tops of the tiles paint will dribble down the tiles edges making it look a bit shoddy.
Place the painted tile on top of something so that the edges do not rest on the floor as they are wet!
Here we have 2 colours of scatter material added.
Using the same colour paint as used on the edges we slap paint all over the tile and sprinkle on the flock.
Do not sprinkle by hand as the moisture on your hand will cause the flock to stick and clump.
I have used some brown flock that will be used to simulate dirt patches/tracks and a fairly standard green grass flock for the rest.
Before applying the next layer of flock we painstakingly use an ear dropper to apply a PVA/water/washing up liquid solution all over the tile.
Then we apply another layer of brown flock.
Then a good scattering of green NOCH static grass.
Here we have applied a bit more of the NOCH static grass mixed with normal flock.
This creates a more textured feel.
A bit more brown is applied to the track.
Next we cover the tile in the watered down pva/soap solution.
We apply a dark coloured green static grass to the slopes of the hills to make the contours that little bit more distinguished.
To the path we add a very light scattering of sand.
Here we give a penultimate covering of the lighter static grass and the tracks are given some small rocks and a very light sprinkling of sand along the middle of the track itself.
It is still wet at this stage hence the photo quality being a bit odd looking.
